Jing first explains: In śamatha and vipaśyanā, regarding the characteristics of dharmas investigated and reflected upon as grasped, the activities have coarse and subtle aspects, which constitute the first two kinds; if toward all those characteristics of dharmas there is no attention, receiving, or observation at all, this is called 'without investigation and without reflection.' This training in contemplating tathatā through non-conceptual contemplation is called 'without investigation and reflection.' These three are all before the bhūmis. They are divided into three according to practice, not distinguished in terms of the desire realm, the first dhyāna, and so forth.
