Section eleven: The gate of the three characteristics. Jing says: The phrase 'if the mind becomes restless... this is called the characteristic of calming': when the mind is restless or arises toward restless objects, directing attention to contemplate dharmas that evoke revulsion, and directing attention to contemplate the continuous succession of that very mind of revulsion, is called the characteristic of calming. The phrase 'if the mind becomes depressed... this is called the characteristic of uplifting': when the mind is depressed or faces depressing objects and fears depression, directing attention to contemplate joyous dharmas, or contemplating the continuous succession of that mind itself, is called the characteristic of uplifting. The phrase 'if in the path of exclusive calming... this is called the characteristic of equanimity': in the path of exclusive calming, exclusive contemplation, or their combined operation, the two secondary afflictions and so forth are all hindrances to equanimity; now, being free from those hindrances, having effortless attention and attention occurring when the mind functions spontaneously is called the characteristic of equanimity.
