Regarding knowing the three meanings: First, the 'meaning of the text' is the teaching. Second, the 'meaning of the expressed' is what is expressed, which has ten kinds. First, 'the characteristic of reality' is the tathatā of all phenomena; the next four are the four truths; sixth, 'the characteristic of categorical distinctions of that reality and the rest' means that the preceding five meanings each have their own categorical distinctions; seventh, 'the characteristic of mutual dependence between the supported and the supporting' means that the meaning is the supported and the name is the supporting, which are mutually related characteristics. Eighth, 'the characteristic of obstructive phenomena to thorough knowledge and the like' refers to the defilements under the four truths. Ninth, 'the characteristic of phenomena conforming to that' refers to the characteristics of all conditioned phenomena conforming to the defilements under those four truths. Tenth, non-thorough knowledge and so on, as well as the virtues of thorough knowledge and so on. Third, 'the meaning of the realms' means the five kinds of realms: first, the container realm, which is the place of residence; second, the realm of sentient beings, which is the sentient beings who reside there; third, the realm of phenomena, which is the taught Dharma teachings, namely the aggregates, elements, sense bases, and so forth; fourth, the realm of subduing, which is the truth of cessation, nirvāṇa; fifth, the realm of the means of subduing, which is the truth of the path. Alternatively, the realm of subduing is the noble path, and the realm of the means of subduing is the expedient preparations prior to the path of seeing; according to this latter explanation, nirvāṇa is subsumed within the realm of phenomena.
