In the second question and answer, regarding the phrase 'only by increasing various lifespans can one accomplish it', there are two explanations. One says: although there is no remaining life, relying on the concentration of mastery, smelting the segmented [lifespan] and increasing the transformational lifespan, one thereby accomplishes Great Awakening. The second says: by prolonging segmented life, one can abide for many kalpas to cultivate the Mahāyāna practice; hence the sūtra says that a srotāpanna reaches [awakening] in eighty thousand kalpas, etc., all by prolonging life and abiding. Although there are two explanations, the former explanation is superior. Regarding the words 'the class of good sons, etc.': whenever it says 'a class of beings', it points to śrāvakas who resolve on bodhi.
