21.426

開諸門中，初總開三門：一、根本事依處，即是生死涅槃果體；二、得方便事依處，即是前果之因，此二自利；三、悲愍他事依處，是利他行。次別開二十三門。

In opening the gates, first three gates are opened in general: first, the fundamental base in matters, which is the entity of the fruition of saṃsāra and nirvāṇa; second, the base in matters as means of attainment, which is the cause of the preceding fruition—these two being for one's own benefit; third, the base in matters of compassion for others, which is the practice of benefiting others. Next, twenty-three gates are opened specifically.
