Tai says: 'In terms of abandoning the three defilements of skin, flesh, and bone, the three incalculable aeons are established. First, the coarseness in the skin is abandoned completely from the first incalculable aeon to the first stage; only then are the first two revealed—the harmful companion and the debilitated dormant defilement that can give rise to active occurrences. Because from the first stage to the seventh stage the coarseness in the flesh is abandoned, in the eighth stage and above the third subtle dormant defilement of clinging to dharmas is revealed, which can give rise to active clinging to dharmas. Those whose coarseness in the bone is completely abandoned abide in the Buddha stage, and therefore are forever separated from all dormant defilements.'
