21.70

第五明如來言音差別。初問答總標，如來言音不過三藏。一者、契經；二者、調伏，舊名為滅；三者、本母，舊名摩德勒伽，今云摩呾履迦，此云本母，由此藏中廣辨諸義，出生種種道理，故名本母，亦可由辨多種種道理，是則出生種種義理，故名本母。

Fifth, explaining the distinctions in the speech and voice of the Tathāgata. The initial question and answer states generally that the Tathāgata's speech and voice do not exceed the three baskets: first, the sūtras; second, the vinaya, formerly termed "cessation"; third, the treatises (mātṛkā), formerly named modelejia, now called mātṛkā, translated here as "mother matrix." Because in this basket various meanings are broadly distinguished and all kinds of reasoning are generated, it is named the mother matrix; or it may also be because by distinguishing many kinds of reasoning, diverse principles and meanings are generated, and hence it is named the mother matrix.
