As for the six stages of cultivation: the matter of distraction refers to the intermediate gradual arising of a distracted mind after emerging from the path of seeing and before entering the path of cultivation. The matters of non-distraction and the basis of non-distraction: these two are generally matters of concentration, serving as the preparatory path for abandoning the cultivatable afflictions of the desire realm; the basis of non-distraction refers exclusively to the essence of concentration, while the matter of non-distraction refers to the other concurrent dharmas aside from the mental factor of concentration. The matter of preparatory exertion without abandoning cultivation: this is the unhindered path for abandoning the cultivatable afflictions of the desire realm. The matter of the excellent benefits of cultivation: this is the unhindered path of separating from the form and formless realms. The matter of its firmness: this is the diamond-like mind.
