In the former, regarding the name and meaning of the teacher, there are briefly sixteen phrases. Master Jing says: "The three meanings of being able to encourage, supremely encouraging, and ultimately encouraging apply throughout the text to the three teachers; the three meanings of being able to guide, supremely guiding, and ultimately guiding also apply to the three teachers." Master Tai says: "The root upādhyāya and ācārya are called the first companions; if one speaks of the vow practices of the bodhisattva and so forth, becoming an upādhyāya and ācārya further for all sentient beings, they are called the second companions. The sūtra contains these distinctive names, hence they are explained."
