First, praising six virtues. Second, praising four virtues. Third, praising five virtues. Fourth, praising six virtues. Fifth, praising seven virtues. Sixth, praising eight virtues. Seventh, praising eight virtues; "the three quietudes" refers to quietude of body, speech, and mind. Eighth, praising the ten epithets. Ninth, praising twenty-two virtues. Tenth, praising general and specific five virtues, where arhat is general and the four knowledges are specific. Eleventh, praising six virtues. Therein, Master Jing says: "eternally severing the five branches" means severing the five fetters binding to the higher realms; "accomplishing the six branches" means accomplishing the six constantly abiding dharmas, because mindfulness, wisdom, and equanimity constantly arise at the gates of the six consciousnesses. Master Ji says: severing the five branches means severing the five higher fetters along with the five lower fetters; accomplishing the six branches means accomplishing the six mindfulnesses. Alternatively, accomplishing the six branches of deportment, domain of activity, and so forth, as explained in the record on Fascicle Thirty-four above. Now, in accordance with the Āgama sūtras, it says that the arhat fruit destroys the five hindrances, obtains the six abidings, protects mindfulness of the single body, subdues the four māras, and so forth; thus here it praises his six virtues: first, severing the five hindrances; second, accomplishing the six constant abidings; third, obtaining the four applications of mindfulness; fourth, subduing the four māras; fifth, accumulating pure goodness; sixth, supreme puruṣa. Twelfth, praising seven dharmas. Thirteenth, praising nine virtues. Fourteenth, praising eight virtues.
