In the tenth, explaining meanings, there are eight clauses. "Self, sentient being, etc." refers either to the spiritual self of the non-Buddhists, or explains the conventional self of the Buddhadharma. In Sanskrit, *sattva*; in the language of the Tang, *youqing* (sentient being). The noble and wise thoroughly understand that there are only conscious feelings and nothing like a self; hence it is called "sentient being." In Sanskrit, *prāṇa*; here called *zhongsheng* (living being). The ancients translating *sattva* as *zhongsheng* (living being) were mistaken. In Sanskrit, *manuṣya*; here called "mind-born"; because it is born from the mind, it is a body of the category of mind. *Māṇavaka* is here called "Confucian youth" or frequently called "young lad"; these are different designations for the spirit; because in the prime of life one has self-mastery and one's mind has highs and lows, formerly it was abbreviated as *mona*. "Nurturer" means creating karma and incurring retribution, offspring and fruit reciprocally arising; this is the meaning of nourishing, hence called "nurturer."
