22.42

初約法故、故名為學，由忍戒淨故，舉忍辱等。言又為寂靜至故名為學者，寂靜破戒得戒清涼，除滅業垢，故名為學。言又應知前說相故至及因果故者，重解訓詞，依訓詞門曲有此五以釋得名，戒由相得名乃至從因果故得名。

First, with respect to the teaching: 'therefore it is called training, because of the purity of forbearance and moral discipline'—bringing up forbearance and so forth. Regarding 'Furthermore, for the sake of tranquility up to therefore it is called training': tranquility eliminates transgressions of moral discipline, obtains the coolness of moral discipline, and eradicates karmic defilement, hence it is called training. Regarding 'Furthermore, one should know from the aforementioned characteristics up to and from cause and fruit': re-explaining the etymology, according to the gateway of etymological explanation there are specifically these five to explain the derivation of the name; moral discipline derives its name from characteristics, up to deriving its name from cause and fruit.
