Because what accords with them has not yet been severed: the pleasurable feeling of the third dhyāna is the suffering of change, and the equanimous feeling of the fourth dhyāna is the suffering of conditioned formations. Because non-Buddhists grasp such pleasant and equanimous feelings as a self, what accords with the two sufferings of change and conditioned formations is not yet severed, and they think 'I shall cease to exist', falsely generating terror toward what should not be feared. The two feelings of pleasure and equanimity are originally not a self; they are merely the two sufferings of change and conditioned formations. Now, revulsion toward them does not eliminate the self, so why trouble oneself to generate fear?
