Regarding the statement 'relying on the severance of the initial entanglement, it is called peaceful and quiet' and so forth: Master Tai says: because of severing the three entanglements, one attains peacefulness and quietude and so forth in their respective order. Master Da says: relying on the exhaustion of afflictions severed by the path of seeing, it is called peaceful and quiet; up to the severance of the cultivation-afflictions of the stage of nothingness, it is called cool; and because the cultivation-afflictions of the stage of neither-perception-nor-non-perception are exhausted, it is called quiescent. Another explanation says: because entanglements of afflictions are severed, it is peaceful and quiet; because latencies are severed, it is called pure; because maturation (vipāka) is severed, it is called quiescent. Furthermore, by three conditions, destinations of consciousness and stations of consciousness are all non-existent: 1. its own nature is not defiled; 2. it is not defiled by others; 3. other companions of defiled consciousness are absent; its meaning can be known.
