Ninth, explaining "imperfect purity": imperfect purity refers to the contemplation of emptiness and selflessness with taints prior to the path of seeing, which suppresses the conception of "I" and "mine." It also suppresses the four ties and the three possessions—the three possessions subsuming the four ties—all as in the text. The four wholesome roots practice selfless conduct, and therefore are designated as subsumed under the stage of concentration. One should know that imperfect purity is due to two causes and conditions: first, the practice of emptiness and selflessness arises with intervals between the view of self and conceit of self; second, the causes and conditions that make those dharmas active, that is, consciousness with contaminated attachment to desires or to the satkāya (body/personality). Because one cannot thoroughly know such consciousness with contaminated attachment, one is swept away and drowned by attachment to the satkāyas, and due to this mental disposition, one cannot enter into that nirvāṇa. Furthermore, by eight aspects, one can thoroughly know and eliminate all faults and perils.
