First, regarding the place of rebirth: as for "pleasure," this refers to those who give rise to the third dhyāna, spoken of as the place where pleasurable feeling is predominant. As for "followed by pleasure," meaning "in the human realm there can be two kinds": Master Jing says: "Although suffering and pleasure arise alternately in the human realm, it is called followed by pleasurable feeling." Master Da says: "When the body is born in the human realm, it is pursued by the latent tendencies of pleasure, hence it says 'followed'; there are seeds of both kinds, suffering and pleasure, hence it says 'there can be two kinds.'" As for "not yet having permanently departed from pleasure," referring to those in the fourth dhyāna and above: although pleasure does not actively manifest, the seeds of pleasure are still formed, so it is called "not yet permanently departed." "Suffering" here refers to those in the realms of ghosts and animals: this is based on a portion of ghosts and animals who experience purely suffering states, which is called the essential nature of suffering.
