Second, the explanation of distinction: regarding 'due to the coming together of the three, the preceding three distinctions are established,' the coming together of sense organ, sense object, and consciousness generates sensation (vedanā). Regarding 'due to the meaning of the fruit of contact from the coming together of the three, the fifth distinction is established,' Master Jing states: Contact is the fruit of the coming together of the three, and sensation is the fruit of contact; therefore, it is generally said to be 'the fruit of contact from the coming together of the three.' Now the interpretation is: simply because it is the fruit of contact from the coming together of the three, the fifth distinction of sensation is established. Regarding 'due to the meaning of the two afflictions of karma and defilement, the seventh and eighth distinctions are established': due to the meaning of the affliction of karma, the seventh distinction of volition (cetanā) is established; due to the meaning of the affliction of defilement, the eighth distinction of craving (tṛṣṇā) is established, because both volition and craving are associated with the three sensations.
