Ninth, it explains the four graspings (upādāna). The text asks: What is grasped? It answers: "Desire, views, precepts and vows, and doctrines of self are grasped": "desire" refers to [objects of desire]; views are the four views; "precepts" are the bodily and verbal actions of chickens, dogs, and the like; "doctrines of self" are the view of self and the self that is conceptualized; these objects that are grasped, by association, are also called grasping. That which can grasp is precisely the four kinds of desire and craving. Regarding "That for the sake of which one grasps: to attain various desires and to enjoy them, one therefore generates the first grasping": one generates that which can grasp within the first grasping. Regarding "Due to craving gain and offerings... up to avoiding and escaping the cross-examinations and challenges of others, one generates the second grasping": because of craving gain and offerings and so forth, one craves and seeks various views. Regarding "Taking the limbs of śamatha as support... up to generating the third grasping": in order to attain the eight absorptions, one undertakes and maintains erroneous precepts. In order to wish to expound upon and distinguish the karmas performed and the fruits experienced, one generates grasping at doctrines of self. The text here is complete and distinct. The Abhidharma only adduces the grasped as grasping; the earlier text of the Yogācāra roughly speaks of that which can grasp as grasping, speaking of the four kinds of desire and craving. It says: "Such four graspings rely upon two categories: namely, the householder category who enjoy desires, and the renunciant category who poorly expound dharmas."
