Third, explaining view as great defilement: Master Jing says: "One is view, two is the remaining afflictions. The defilement of view conceives of 'I' and 'mine', whereupon the rest follows; this serves as the root. For the various foreign dogmatic destinations, the other four dogmatic destinations of views, the sixty-two views, etc., have the view of self as their root. The remaining afflictions are the second defilement. Furthermore, when freed from the defilement of views, one is also freed from the rest; but when freed from the rest, one is not freed from the views. Why is this? Because for one who is born herein, relying on the worldly path, up to liberation from greed and desire for the sphere of nothingness, yet not freed from the view of the body (satkāyadṛṣṭi), this is suppressing the afflictions of cultivation but not suppressing the afflictions of view. Alternatively, one may sever the afflictions of view, and the afflictions of cultivation are also severed. Because of this view, toward all formations of lower and higher realms, their blended self-entities, without observing their differences, one comprehensively conceives them as 'I', or conceives 'mine.'"
