Fourth, in explaining 'one destination' (ekāyana), it should be known that the path is called 'one destination' by virtue of three kinds of characteristics: namely, on the stage of ordinary beings, one observes formations through five aspects; then one cultivates and purifies these formations across two stages—namely, on the stage of those in training who are progressing [on the path] and on the stage of those beyond training; together with the preceding ordinary beings, these make three characteristics. As for the passage below, 'What are the five aspects?', which specifies the five aspects: Master Da says: 'The phrase "five bases" refers to the bases of the five aggregates. The phrase "own-nature" refers only to the own-nature of conditioned, tainted formations subsumed under the truth of suffering. The phrase "causes and conditions of formations" refers to the causes and conditions subsumed under the truth of arising that can bring about the truth of suffering. The "cause and condition of defilement" is pleasant feeling. The "cause and condition of purification" is peril. "Purification" is the acquired truth of cessation.'
