The phrase "regarding the first group of beings, generates pleasant thoughts" refers to persons who from beginning to end practice correct conduct. "Regarding the second group of beings, generates unpleasant thoughts" refers to persons who from beginning to end practice erroneous conduct. "Regarding the third group of beings, generates pleasant thoughts and generates unpleasant thoughts" means that such a person is good in the beginning and bad in the end. "Regarding the fourth group of beings, generates unpleasant thoughts and generates pleasant thoughts" means that such a person is initially bad and subsequently good. "Regarding the fifth group of beings, generates pleasant thoughts" because they practice one part of correct conduct; "generates unpleasant thoughts" because they practice one part of heedlessness; and "also generates pleasant and unpleasant thoughts" because in practicing one part, they are at times heedless and at times not heedless. Furthermore, regarding the phrase "contemplating the three kinds of counterparts in accordance with the five transformations": although the five transformations differ, they are briefly classified into three categories: first, the agreeable, which is the whole of the first and a small part of the practice of the latter three; second, the disagreeable, which is the whole of the second and a small portion of the latter three; and third, the agreeable, which is a small portion of the latter three by virtue of the perception of impermanence. Towards the first type of person one does not generate greed and attachment; by virtue of a mind of loving-kindness, towards the second type of person one does not generate anger; and by virtue of the signless concentration, towards the third type of person one generates neither attachment nor anger. The phrase "the objects of the three transformations" refers to summarising the five classes of beings into three.
