Eleventh, explaining 'following along'. Master Jing says: 1. with respect to cognitive objects conducive to joy; 2. following along and taking deep joy and pleasure; 3. inappropriately grasping their characteristics and generating greedy desire; 4. frequently giving rise to seeking; 5. thereupon extensively performing meritorious, non-meritorious [deeds], and so forth. Master Tai says: Intending to discern the eighteen mental applications without listing their names and numbers, it only conveys their meaning. Master Da also says: The five characteristics are: 1. following along with joyful objects; 2. inappropriately grasping characteristics and generating greed; 3. frequently giving rise to investigation; 4. seeking through expedients; 5. thereupon extensively engaging in meritorious and non-meritorious actions. Here, it is explained in terms of the approach of the eighteen mental applications: three means the six applications of joy, the six applications of grief, and the six applications of equanimity; the six applications of joy have already been explained. From 'just as capable' downward, the six of grief and six of equanimity are analogously discerned.
