Explaining the arising of the present two fruits from the ten causes of the past limit, Master Jing says: The phrase 'namely, as one who in a past life was not intelligent' up to 'karma of body, speech, and mind' refers to past ignorance creating past conditioned factors. 'With this as condition, consciousness faring in accordance with karma' means that with conditioned factors as condition, the seeds of conventional expression of the branch of consciousness are perfumed and aroused. 'Up to the end of life' to 'the cause of the consciousness connecting to rebirth' means that the consciousness of the previous life, being perfumed and aroused by conditioned factors, continues without interruption up until the end of the previous life, and is capable of being the cause for the first consciousness connecting to rebirth in the present life; that is, the retributive consciousness of the previous life holds the seeds of conventional expression of the branch of consciousness to serve as the cause for the first connecting consciousness of the present retribution. 'Thus successively': the seed of consciousness of the previous life can lead to the seed of name-and-form; the seed of name-and-form can lead to the six sense bases; the seeds of the six sense bases can lead to contact; the seeds of contact lead to feeling; hence it says 'successively'. From feeling, craving arises; craving again generates grasping; craving and grasping having arisen, they moisten the seeds of prior conditioned factors and the seeds of consciousness, etc., causing them to become 'existence'. Therefore it says: 'internal and external craving and consciousness, when producing the fruit, can serve as companions and arise manifestly.' Above, the general discernment of the ten causes of the past limit is concluded.
