The former section is divided into three. First, in explaining the object, it brings forth four dharmas as the objects observed in the four applications of mindfulness. It says that the six elements, such as earth, serve as the basis for the six contact-spheres: although it mentions the six elements, the intention is to observe the five elements of the four great elements and space as the object of the application of mindfulness to the body; the four great elements and space serve as the basis for the five contact-spheres such as the eye, and the consciousness element serves as the basis for the mind contact-sphere. As for 'the six contact-spheres serve as the basis for the eighteen mental applications': although it mentions the six contact-spheres such as the eye, the intention is to take the essence of contact born from the six sense faculties as the object of the application of mindfulness to phenomena; from those six sense faculties are born painful contact, pleasant contact, and neither-painful-nor-pleasant contact, giving rise to the six sorrows, six joys, and six equanimities as the object of the application of mindfulness to feeling; these eighteen mental applications are able to defile the simultaneous primary mind, which constitutes the application of mindfulness to the mind.
