From 'Like having already attained the path, etc.' downward is a general differentiation. In 'All of these, in short, to desire to attain realization, one cultivates that knowledge,' it means cultivating the basis of wisdom. In 'Having already attained realization, one then obtains the noble path and the fruits of the noble path': 'obtaining realization' is the basis of truth; 'then obtains the noble path' is the third, obtaining the pleasant abiding in the present life by relinquishing defilements; 'and the fruits of the noble path' is the fourth, obtaining the unconditioned fruit by relying on tranquility and extinguishing the remaining matters of the fetters. From 'One kind herein' downward, it rediscusses the four relies, in which it first discusses and next explains. From 'Thus' downward is the conclusion. In this, 'the previously attained noble path is called the path of tranquility' refers to the path of seeing with characteristics. 'For the sake of severing the matters of afflictions of the higher stages' means for removing the afflictions of cultivation. 'Regarding the severance of those matters, redoubling progress and increase; regarding the severance of afflictions, preventing regression from what has not yet been attained' refers to severing karmic retribution matters, and within the severance of afflictions, preventing regression from what should be attained but has not yet been attained.
