Below, questions and answers comprehensively discuss the three gates subsuming the meaning of śramaṇa. From 'proper application [...] down to there being completely no self,' Master Jing says: It means that in the stage of ordinary beings prior to the path of seeing, individually observing the internal and external four great elements and space, abiding in the five types of contemplation of the body; in order to seek the higher, right wisdom and the two liberations, one contemplates the elements as lacking self. This is the intention for generating contemplation. 'Relying on the power of reflective consideration, having already distanced oneself from greed toward the form elements' means suppression and distancing. 'Yet regarding the objective condition, one has not yet been able to sever it' means that the latent tendencies have not yet been severed. Below, 'Regarding future...', explains the reason for suppressing without severing. In 'mental liberation, etc.,' because of distancing from greed, the mind attains liberation. From 'From this point onward down to contemplating without inverted views,' it means contemplating the five internal sense faculties as the application of mindfulness to the body.
