The fourth [gate] explains grasping appearances. Regarding 'Herein, the head cook up to wonderful food and clothing': this is a metaphor for śamatha and so forth in the inner mind. Just as a worldly head cook prepares offerings for the master, this is like a practitioner cultivating yoga whose management of calming and raising resembles serving that mind embraced by concentration; fine delicacies are a metaphor for the appearances of calming and raising, since the essence of concentration can precisely nourish the simultaneous primary mind, like the fine food and clothing above; the dark category and the white category are metaphors for the foolish and the wise.
