Seventh, in explaining activity: regarding the śamī leaves and the sāla branch leaves, Jing and Da say: In the western lands there is a tree named śamī, whose branches and leaves are uneven and do not correspond one-to-one, having perhaps one or two, up to six or seven leaves. This illustrates the four truths following one another with one missing, two missing, or three missing. The sāla branch leaves correspond four by four, illustrating the knowledge of the four truths assembled in completion. It is also said that śamī leaves are defective and irregular, whereas sāla branch leaves are complete and fully endowed.
