Fifth, explaining establishment: By four causal conditions, three kinds of three realms and two realms of renunciation are established. The four causes are: first, non-renunciation externally and renunciation, and so forth. The three kinds of three realms are: first, the three realms of desire and so forth; second, the realms of form, the formless, and cessation; third, the realms of severing, cessation, and freedom from desire. The two realms of renunciation are the fivefold and sixfold. Herein, conditioned by desire and craving, the desire realm is established; renouncing this realm, the initial dhyāna of the form realm is established. 'By the meaning of renouncing investigation, joy, and pleasure, the upper three dhyānas are established': the text is abbreviated; stated fully, it should say that by renouncing investigation and reflection the second dhyāna is established; by renouncing joy the third dhyāna is established; by renouncing pleasure the fourth dhyāna is established. 'By ideations of form, of resistance, and of variety, renouncing [them] establishes the base of space': the ideation of form is the ideation of blue, yellow, and so forth; the ideation of resistance is the ideation of long, short, and so forth; combining the former two constitutes the ideation of variety, which is different from the Hīnayāna explanation. 'By form' is ideation associated with eye-consciousness. 'Resistance' is ideation associated with the four consciousnesses. 'Variety' is the mental factor of ideation associated with mental consciousness. 'By the meaning of renouncing ideations of space, consciousness, and nothingness, the upper three are established': this is the first, establishing the three realms of desire and so forth by the meaning of non-renunciation externally and renunciation. Furthermore, from 'the form realm' onward clarifies that by the second cause, the three realms are again established. Furthermore, from 'within the form realm, it is not ultimate' onward clarifies that by the third cause, the three realms are again established. 'Those without excessive conceit' below clarifies that by the fourth cause the two realms of renunciation are established, referring to the explanation as in Fascicle Eleven.
