Eighth, from "Furthermore, regarding those feelings, it should be known that in brief there are three kinds of quiescence" downward, it explains quiescence. Regarding "delighting in discourse," this is the second repeated explanation of quiescence. Master Jing says: "This text clearly proves that there is subtle investigation during absorption. The Tripiṭaka Master always said that there is investigation and reflection in the preliminary preparation, but when entering absorption there is none; therefore, having them in absorption is merely preliminary preparation, not in the fundamental [absorption]. Now this text says that there are subtle investigation and reflection in absorption, without specifying fundamental or preliminary preparation; since the path can broadly have them, in principle there is also no contradiction." Master Da says: "The Tripiṭaka Master reconciled this text by addressing the preliminary absorption. What I discuss is stated with regard to the fundamental absorption."
