Regarding the statement that it takes only that which is capable of initiating and directly bringing about wholesome and unwholesome karma of future lives: however, this has four [aspects]: first, associated; second, unassociated; third, active entanglements; fourth, latent proclivities. All of them can initiate karma. Non-Buddhists and Buddhists, ordinary beings, negligent and non-negligent, all initiate karma differently according to how they apply the four ignorances, as the Pratītyasamutpādasūtra itself distinguishes extensively. Here, 'formation' is said to encompass body, speech, and mind, and has as its intrinsic nature only the active states and seeds, designated form, and intention of wholesome and unwholesome; this also has three kinds, because it brings about three fruits.
