Regarding 'relying on contact conditioning feeling, giving rise to craving,' this is the limb of craving. 'Due to experiencing objects, extensively giving rise to pursuit,' and so on, this is the limb of grasping. 'Through the gateway of enterprises' refers to pure conduct, serving the king, and so on; 'through the gateway of gain' refers to sitting to harvest seeds, plowing fields, and so on. These two arise from external desirable objects and are called the pursuit of desires. 'Or through the gateway of rules and observances' refers to the grasping of rules and observances through wrong aspirations; through this, one gives rise to the pursuit of the internal body, because one seeks a body of future pleasurable fruition. 'Or through the gateway of liberation' refers to the grasping of views; through this, one gives rise to the pursuit of wrong liberation. One opinion holds: the gateway of enterprises refers to grasping at desires; the gateway of gain refers to grasping at views, because for the sake of gain one's clinging to views is strong; the gateway of rules and observances refers to grasping at rules and observances; the gateway of liberation refers to grasping at the theory of self, because due to truth and permanence one grasps the self-nature of the self as liberation. Relying on these four grasps, three pursuits are initiated: first, the pursuit of desires, because one mostly seeks the five desires; second, the pursuit of the internal body, which is the pursuit of existence, because one seeks one's own substance; third, the pursuit of wrong liberation, which is the pursuit of wrong religious practice (brahmacarya), because one seeks wrong liberation. Regarding 'when seeking in this way, causing previously arisen afflictions and karma' and so on: this means karma is the limb of existence; ignorance serves as the condition that initiates karma, causing future fruitions to arise, but ignorance is not the limb of existence.
