依字釋名者，由煩惱繫縛為緣往諸趣中數數生起故名緣起，依緣字起字釋緣起字故名依字，（景師補闕）云：由諸煩惱繫縛往諸趣中者釋緣字也，數數生起者釋起字也。

Regarding "explaining the name based on the characters": because one repeatedly arises in the various destinies conditioned by the binding of defilements, it is called "dependent origination" (pratītyasamutpāda). Because the characters "pratītya" (condition/depending) and "samutpāda" (arising) are explained according to the characters themselves, it is called "based on the characters." Master Jing's supplementary commentary says: "bound by defilements and going to the various destinies" explains the character "pratītya"; "repeatedly arising" explains the character "samutpāda."
