Jing explains: Although no explicit text has been seen, according to reason, one should take the mental volition simultaneous with the noble path as the fourth karma. Because when the noble path arises there are no distinct physical and vocal karmic substances, it is only with reference to mental volition that the seven physical and vocal factors are nominally designated as path-concomitant; or, tracing the nominal back to the real, mental volition is taken as the fourth karma. Because that mental volition arises in conjunction with taintless wisdom as the antidote of abandonment, the uninterrupted [path] here directly severs the seeds of affliction, and by means of the preparatory path diminishes the capability of the afflictions.
