If we explain the first three karmas according to the Abhidharma[-samuccaya]: when the two vehicles attain the fruits in sequence, the single uninterrupted volition of the path of seeing and the gradual detachment from desire—the first eight uninterrupted volitions abandon purely black and mixed karma (since mixed karma extends to both natures); the ninth uninterrupted volition abandons purely black and mixed karma completely, together with white-white karma. In detachment from the four form and four formless realms, the ninth uninterrupted volition solely abandons white-white karma; this is spoken according to gradual attainment of the fruits. If one relies on the four dhyānas to leap into the path of seeing and attain the third fruit, a single uninterrupted volition also abandons the three kinds. If one leaps from the first fruit to grasp the fourth fruit, the first eight uninterrupted volitions along with the bodhisattva's path of seeing solely abandon purely black and mixed karma; the ninth uninterrupted volition along with the bodhisattva's diamond-like samādhi abandons all three karmas together. This speaks of abandoning seeds. If subduing active manifestations, with the sole exception of the path of seeing, all other states add the preparatory path; the remaining meanings are the same as before. Distinct explanations of abandonment, such as separation from bondage, are also not uniform, and should be considered in accordance with reason.
