As for the mental applications of conceptual and non-conceptual mental representations: the conceptual intrinsic nature and sphere are the minds and mental factors of the three realms; the term 'conceptual' subsumes the phenomena of the three realms, which is the 'discrimination' among the five dharmas consisting of marks, names, and discriminations. The objective entity of these two mental applications is one and the same; because insight and calming are distinct, they are divided into two kinds. Fascicle 11 of the Abhidharma states: "A conceptual mental representation refers to the sphere focused upon by concentration and insight of the mental application of resolute intention. A non-conceptual mental representation as focal object refers to the sphere focused upon by concentration and insight of the mental application of reality." There, based on tainted mental application, calming and insight are named conceptual mental representations because their intrinsic nature is false discrimination; taintless calming and insight are named non-conceptual mental representations because their intrinsic nature is not false. Here, based on the focal object being called the conceptual entity, the apprehending calming and insight are divided into two kinds; hence there is no contradiction.
