In the mental application taking fulfillment of what was to be done as focal object, it is first analyzed with respect to the cause, because within the cause there is also the principle of partially fulfilling what was to be done. Stating 'if I contemplate such and such' refers to apprehending one's own severance of suffering and origin in the cause; 'such' is repeated because they are not single. 'If I contemplate in such and such a manner' conversely refers to cultivating and realizing cessation and path in the cause; 'such a manner' is repeated because cessation and path are not single. 'There will be such and such' means further causing sentient beings to have such severances of suffering and origin—'such' is repeated because suffering and origin are not single—and cultivating and realizing cessation and path in such a manner—'such a manner' is repeated because cessation and path are not single. Next, it takes the fruit as focal object, and therefore states 'and the mental application taking a purified focal object'. In the subsumptions below, pointing to what was previously done in that cause extends through the seven mental applications as the initial gate; pointing to taking the buddha-fruition as object is the latter gate, which exclusively subsumes the mental application of the fruition of ultimate preparatory application. In the stage of cultivation, there is no other distinct sphere, but it remotely apprehends the preceding three kinds of spheres. As for 'the mental application taking fulfillment of what was to be done as focal object refers to "I contemplate such..."' and so on, judging from the text below it is exclusively in the buddha-fruition beyond training; now in this text, it first analyzes mental application in terms of benefiting oneself and others within the cause, and later analyzes it in terms of the fruit. The statement 'I contemplate such and such' refers to the calming and insight of the signless path of seeing taking the principle as causal object, and thus is collectively called the sphere of the limits of things; in the stage of cultivation there is no other distinct sphere, but it remotely apprehends the preceding three spheres. Furthermore, if the preceding three spheres are in the buddha stage, they are collectively called the mental application taking fulfillment of what was to be done as focal object.
