Regarding indicating the number and explaining the names: first, "having form, one contemplates forms," down to "liberation of cessation, having personally verified it with the body, one abides in its completeness." Relying on the Kośa, fascicle twenty-nine, it says: The first is named "internally possessing the notion of form, one contemplates external forms." Because contemplation is prominent, it is designated with the name of ideation and contemplation. Internally not yet having suppressed and eliminated the viewer's notion of form is called "internally having form"; contemplating only external objects is called "externally contemplating form." In the Mahāyāna, it is not so: not having separated from desire for the form realm, or although already separated from it, the viewer's notion of form is established and present, so it is called "having form"; contemplating both internal and external is called "contemplating forms."
