"Internally without the notion of form, one contemplates external forms": That Hīnayāna [school] says that internally having suppressed and eliminated the notion of form is called "internally without the notion of form," and contemplating only external objects is called "contemplating external forms." Now, this treatise explains that having relied on the formless absorptions to abandon defilement of the form realm is called "internally without the notion of form," and because these very forms have transcended defilement, they are called "external"; contemplating these as objects is called "contemplating external forms." The word "contemplates" in the above two refers to conceptualizing and mentally reflecting so as to manifest those notions, for the sake of mastery in miraculous transformation among forms.
