Generally stating the essence of the five direct perceptions in terms of subduing and severing, it therefore says 'this is their general, summarized intrinsic nature'. In the individual explanations, regarding the first two contemplations, the treatise has two sets of explanations: The first set states: The first contemplation of impurity is precisely the foundation of mindfulness, having the preparatory foundation of mindfulness as its support; the second contemplation of impurity is the subsequent foundation of mindfulness, having the first foundation of mindfulness as its support. The 'second contemplation of impurity' demonstrates the two contemplations of impurity in terms of the differences in the causal conditioning of the preparatory and root stages on which they rely, since the first takes impurity as its object and the latter takes the skeleton.
