In the first part, up to the fourth dhyāna, regarding 'the distinction of the purity of equanimity and mindfulness should be known', there are two explanations of this distinction: first, it generally clarifies the distinctions of the four dhyānas, such as with investigation and with reflection, the stillness of investigation and reflection, the stillness of joy, the stillness of pleasure, and the purity of equanimity and mindfulness; second, it clarifies the distinction solely in contrast to the third dhyāna. The third dhyāna also has equanimity and mindfulness, but they are not called pure because it has not yet abandoned the afflictions of higher realms. The fourth dhyāna, because it has completely abandoned hindrances, obtains the name 'purity of equanimity and mindfulness'; hence it says 'the distinction should be known'.
