On "Escape from desire, ill will, and harmfulness means, up to, the escape from the faculty of pleasure": the escape from desire first refers to the contemplation of impurity; next, the escape from ill will refers to the contemplation of benevolence; last, the escape from harmfulness refers to the contemplation of compassion. These three escapes are precisely the escapes from the four faculties of sorrow, suffering, joy, and pleasure, because benevolence and compassion can be attained throughout the four dhyānas. In the fourth dhyāna, benevolence and compassion are precisely the escape from the four sensations. On "Escape from form means the escape from the faculty of equanimity of the fourth dhyāna": this is because by attaining the concentration of the base of infinite space, desire for form is abandoned, which is the escape from the faculty of equanimity of the four dhyānas and so forth.
