Regarding the four kinds of bondage, Jing says: Summarizing the five aggregates into four spheres, the four spheres are bondages, because the characteristics of the objective sphere can bind the mind. The afflictions that can cognize them are called the bondage of crude heaviness. The treatise says 'the bondage of grasping': because that physical body is grasped by the ālayavijñāna, this which is grasped serves as an object binding the mind, and is called the bondage of grasping; or alternatively, the material sphere being able to bind the grasping mind is called the bondage of grasping. Below in this treatise, manas is spoken of as the bondage of characteristics: because it arises without binding the internal bondage, the characteristic of the ālayavijñāna, it is called the bondage of characteristics.
