Fascicle forty of the Zhidu lun says: 'Before a bodhisattva attains buddhahood, how does he know the untainted minds of śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas?' Answer: 'This is so in your śrāvaka teachings, but in the Mahāyāna teachings, a bodhisattva attains the acceptance of the non-arising of dharmas, severs the fetters, and continuously does not lose the six supernormal powers lifetime after lifetime; with tainted knowledge of others' minds he can know untainted minds, to say nothing of doing so with untainted knowledge of others' minds.' Furthermore, in the Mahāyāna, a bodhisattva's knowledge of others' minds extends to the untainted across the three realms, being able to penetrate all minds and mental factors, just as the Shidi lun says: 'Living beings in the human realm have small minds; desire-realm devas have broad minds; form-realm and formless-realm devas have the two liberation minds up to the immeasurable; as the sūtra speaks of small minds, broad minds, and immeasurable minds, the bodhisattva truly contemplates and knows them with the knowledge of others' minds.'
