因果相似者,善因樂果惡因苦果,能成所成展轉相似。邁云:自世親前則以瓶等物體為喻,無常同聲故名為同類,從陳那後瓶之與聲既全殊,況亦四塵一塵何成同品,故瓶無常與聲無常義有均等,故名同品。
Regarding "similarity of cause and effect": wholesome causes bring pleasant results, and unwholesome causes bring painful results; the probans and the probandum are mutually similar. Mai says: Prior to Vasubandhu, material objects such as pots were used as examples: because they are impermanent, like sound, they were called "homogeneous instances" (sajāti). Since Dignāga, however, pots and sound are completely distinct; moreover, how could four dust-particles and one dust-particle constitute a homogeneous class (sapakṣa)? Therefore, it is because the meaning of the pot's impermanence and sound's impermanence are equal that they are called "homogeneous classes."
