An interpretation from the Western Regions says: in the Śrāvakayāna path of seeing, merely contemplating the tathatā revealed by impermanence is the ultimate specific characteristic, and therefore it is direct perception. If an unconcentrated mind takes common characteristics as object without knowing the specific characteristics, it is like seeing the smoke of a fire from afar; one knows thereby that there is fire, but because one does not know the hot intrinsic nature of that fire, nor does one know what kind of fire it is—a grass fire, a dung fire, or the like.
