Regarding the "clause conforming to the preceding", taking any two phenomena among phenomena and questioning them mutually, one answers the question based on the preceding phenomenon; questioning the broad with the narrow conforms to the preceding clause. Regarding the "clause conforming to the subsequent", questioning two phenomena mutually in turn, one answers the question based on the subsequent clause; questioning the narrow with the broad conforms to the subsequent clause, because every narrow entity necessarily entails the broad, while there are broad entities that are not narrow. Or, toward the question, one should answer with two clauses, three clauses, or four clauses. Here, proceeding from the broad to explain, only four clauses are stated, because their entities have broad and narrow distinctions or are not the same. When the broad and narrow meanings are identical, one should answer with assent; this is also called answering "it is so". When the question is not in accordance with reason, answering "it is not so" is called answering without fact; it is also called answering with negation. This is explained extensively in the fifteenth fascicle of the Abhidharma, which says: Discerning and demonstrating determination means, within the stated phenomena such as the aggregates, making a single traversal, a clause conforming to the preceding, a clause conforming to the subsequent, two clauses, three clauses, four clauses, an assenting clause, a negating clause, and so on as appropriate. Doctrinal determination means determining all truth and falsity by question and answer based on the words of the eight "what"s and eight "if"s. Furthermore, as the ninety-seventh fascicle of the Vibhāṣā extensively clarifies the minor four clauses, medium four clauses, major four clauses, and "such" clauses, its twenty-eight pairs of two gates, five triads of gates, and so on, are all explained as in the sixty-fifth and other fascicles of the Viniścayasaṃgrahaṇī. Among them, mental dharmas and mental factors are called having an objective support, conjoined, having an active aspect, and having a basis; the rest can be known.
