應答言：細等者，景云：種姓未生果時，未習成果，其用未增，微隱名細，但名性種姓。後若藉緣增長，已與果時，已習成果；若種、若果、俱說名麁，此雖舊種，增長已去，即名習種，新熏種子，亦名習種。今種姓地，意明性種，後趣入地，方明習種也。

Regarding "one should reply: subtle," and so forth: Jing says that when the gotra has not yet produced fruit, it has not been cultivated into fruit, its function has not increased, and being minute and hidden, it is called "subtle," and is merely called the natural gotra. Later, if it depends on conditions to increase, and when it has already yielded fruit, it has already been cultivated into fruit; whether seed or fruit, both are said to be "coarse." Although this is an old seed, once it increases, it is called a cultivated seed; newly perfumed seeds are also called cultivated seeds. Now in the stage of gotra, the intention is to clarify the natural gotra, and only later in the stage of entering does it clarify the cultivated gotra.
