However, the duration of this Dharma's abiding differs across nearby textual passages. According to the Māyā-sūtra, the true Dharma abides for five hundred years; according to the Mahākaruṇā-sūtra and others, the true Dharma lasts one thousand years, the semblance Dharma one thousand years, and the degenerate Dharma ten thousand years. Furthermore, Nandimitra's Record of the Abiding of the Dharma says: 'Regarding this Buddha-Dharma, after the kalpa of weapons, people will feel revulsion and all give rise to loving-kindness, no longer killing one another but showing mutual pity, like fathers and sons. Lifespans will gradually increase until reaching full one hundred years. The sixteen great arhats, possessing the three knowledges and six supernormal faculties, endowed with the eight liberations, well versed in the three baskets and the twelve divisions of scriptures, having received the Buddha's entrustment to maintain the true Dharma and benefit sentient beings, do not enter parinirvāṇa. Together with the other great arhats of their retinues, more than ten thousand disciples, they again spread the Tathāgata's teaching of the three baskets in the world, guiding and converting the multitude of living beings, building monasteries, ordaining monks, and cultivating precepts, concentration, and wisdom. The Buddha-Dharma will flourish until the human lifespan increases to the end of sixty thousand years and the beginning of seventy thousand years. All the arhats will gather all the relics of the Tathāgata, build a jeweled stupa together, and the sixteen arhats and their retinues will circumambulate the stupa, make offerings, scatter various fragrant flowers, and having gazed up and paid homage, will all ascend into the sky and speak thus: "We pay homage to the World-Honoured One, Śākyamuni Tathāgata, the Worthy, the Fully Enlightened One! We received the instruction to protect and maintain the true Dharma, and bring abundant benefit to devas and humans. The store of Dharma has already vanished, and our connections with sentient beings are completed; we now bid farewell and enter extinction." Having spoken these words, all enter nirvāṇa without remainder simultaneously. That relic stupa will then sink into the earth, stopping only when reaching the edge of the golden wheel. The teaching of the three baskets will have already vanished one hundred years prior to the relics. Only this pure Dharma, together with the relic stupa and all the arhats, will vanish all at once. At that time, the unsurpassable true Dharma of the World-Honoured One Śākyamuni will be forever extinguished and not appear in this great trichiliocosm. Immediately following this, in this buddhafield, seventy billion pratyekabuddhas will appear at once. When human lifespan reaches eighty thousand years, the noble assembly of pratyekabuddhas will also all enter extinction, and afterward Maitreya will appear in the world.'
