In explaining the third gate, regarding 'attachment to the ālaya, completely fettered in all modes', Jing says: 'Grasping the ālaya as a self, because of loving the self, one loves the requisites of the self; thus attachment to the ālaya is completely fettered in all modes. Furthermore, due to this attachment, other afflictions arise and grow within the ālaya; hence it says "attached to the basis, forming immeasurable phenomena". Since there is no path of abandoning, it is difficult to uproot. Since there are no seeds, there is no cause; without a cause, the collateral conditions of the Buddhas cannot save [them]; unable to be saved, all evil dharmas are definitively firm and follow them for a long time.' Master Bei recounts the Tripiṭaka Master's explanation: 'Defiled collection completely stores all eighteen realms, twelve sense bases, and five clinging aggregates; hence it says "completely in all", because ālaya means defiled collection.'
